Stone worked as an artist in Los Angeles through the early 00's, producing sculptural and architectural work that engaged viewers in activities that completed the objects through unselfconscious performance. These objects included custom car parts, fashion, sports equipment, furniture and finally installation and buildings. These projects were exhibited at The Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, Moca Miami, and the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum in New York and Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art.
Robert Stone (b. August 15, 1968 in Palm Springs, California) approaches architecture as an idiosyncratic personal and regional expression and he states openly that his architecture is inseparable from his biography and surroundings. Significant among these references are formative experiences growing up in Palm Springs, California- a center for experimental modern architecture in the 1940s-60's that devolved into a conservative retirement community by the time Stone came of age. Stone's work references the darker side of classic modernism of his home town and wide ranging personal aesthetic associations with class, politics, fashion, art, and music. His involvement in the low desert music scene in the 90's is also a common origin point for defining independent artistic practice, a value of underground aesthetic approaches, and a punk rock inspired do-it-yourself ethic. Stone attended the University of California at Berkeley for Bachelors and Masters degrees in Architectural studies but he regularly cites Los Angeles artists as his aesthetic references.
